Journalism and Public Service: AGM, Sept 9-10

Association for Journalism Education Annual Conference, 9th and 10th September, 2010, at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

Theme: Journalism and Public Service

The AJE is the largest national – in fact, bi-national – organisation for journalism educators in Europe, with 50 universities in membership across the UK and Ireland, and around 500 journalism educators covered by that membership.

The AJE is holding its AGM and annual conference at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, on Thursday, 9th and Friday, 10th September 2010.

The conference Journalism and Public Service will focus on the role that journalists play in shaping and reflecting society, and the importance of journalism education in that role. We’ve put together a fantastic programme of presentations and star speakers.

On Friday award-winning journalist HEATHER BROOKE will talk about Serving the Public through Journalism.

And then at 7pm on Thursday 9th, we will have our keynote speaker: MARTIN BELL, OBE, UNICEF ambassador and former broadcaster and Independent MP, on the ‘Twilight of News’.

Also on Friday STEWART KIRKPATRICK, publisher of Scotland’s first online-only newspaper the Caledonian Mercury, will tell us about Public Service Journalism in the Multi-media Age.

And on Thursday, just before our popular wine reception, writer SHIV MALIK will talk about the book he has written with ED HOWKER of the Spectator, Jilted Generation, how Britain has bankrupted its youth.

We will also host our popular wine reception followed by a dinner at one of Glasgow’s premier restaurants.

The AJE membership knows that, in addition to the benefits of the event’s formal programme, the conference and the social dinner are important, enjoyable occasions for networking and swapping ideas in our field. Anyone employed full or part time at an AJE member institution, or any of their postgraduate research students, and AJE individual members will be very welcome.

The conference will be held at the Scottish Universities Insight Institute (formerly Institute of Advanced Studies), which is on the first floor of the James Weir Building, 75 Montrose Street, Glasgow. Could anyone who has mobility difficulties please contact Sallyanne Duncan in advance of the conference at sallyanne.duncan@strath.ac.uk. Could anyone with special dietary needs also please contact Sallyanne at this email address. The fee for the conference is £25, payable at the event, which includes lunch on September 10th.
